The International Student Congress of (bio)Medical Sciences, also known as ISCOMS, is not just any regular congress, it is a non-profit organisation made up of students that aims to promote student research and the international exchange of it. ISCOMS has been enriched with the focus ‘Healthy Ageing’. During the congress this focus stands out within various components of the programme of ISCOMS.
This year was the 22nd edition and around 600 people attended ISCOMS. They could join in on student sessions, workshops, a pre-course for mastering research and keynote lectures. One of the keynote speakers at the congress was the Nobel Laureate professor Martin Chalfie PhD. Professor Chalfie is a University professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University in New York City. His research demonstrating the use of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) as a biological marker led to him sharing the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Osau Shimomura and Roger Y. Tsien. This biological marker has become one of the most important tools in bioscience.
The Healthy Ageing Network Northern Netherlands (HANNN) is happy to be one of the sponsors of ISCOMS 2015.
HANNN Best Abstract Award
With the HANNN Best Abstract Award, the network recognizes excellence in healthy ageing research. The HANNN Best Abstract Award is handed to an outstanding abstract submitted in the Healthy Ageing category by students/ early career professionals. With this award, HANNN would like to motivate young talent to think out of the box and work together with people from other disciplines in order to find new solutions that support an active and healthy life.
The winner of the HANNN Best Abstract Award this year was Waqas Ahmad from Pakistan. Health becomes more relevant when it comes to healthcare professionals who differ from general population in regards to the nature of their work, stress, burnout, etc. which begs the need to have a robust state of health for the ones who provide it to others. He initiated this study to see if healthcare professionals “practice what they preach”. They found out that healthcare professionals do not practice what they preach. Their mental wellbeing, diet, and exercise habits are not up to mark and should be improved to foster the whole healthcare system for individual and community benefits.
HANNN feels that this is an important topic, because it is not about finding a cure for a certain disease, but it is about changing a lifestyle pattern, to help a community and individuals age healthier.
The price includes a HANNN network voucher of value € 500,-. This voucher will enable the winner to participate at a congress/ seminar/ workshop of his/her choice in order to enlarge network, skills and capabilities. Moreover, the winner of the price may use the award seal for validation and visibility of the abstract.
ISCOMS Business Lunch
Life Science companies Integrex, Syncom, ABL and Ofichem take part in the ISCOMS Business Lunch. During this session a selected group of international students get to meet with Top Life Science companies from the north of the Netherlands. It’s a great opportunity for companies to meet potential employee and for student to get a better inside view on the activities, needs and opportunities on the work floor of such organizations. The Healthy Ageing Campus facilitated the lunch as they saw the importance to link companies and student better to each other. A casual lunch setting is the perfect way to bring both groups with similar interest together. The event already takes place for the second year, after last year’s good feedback from companies as well as students.
